Non communicable life style diseases pose a huge threat Globally and  to the nation’s public health system both in terms of morbidityand mortality along with  the economic burden it imposes .It is estimated that more than 50% of deaths occurring in the productive age group between 30 and 60 are due to one of the causes of NCD. In order to address this  greatest public health challenges, the Kerala state Health Department   and NRHM has designed and implemented  a non communicable diseases prevention and control programme in the state – which is the first of its kind in the country-  covering the entire population of the state.

 

The program has three main objectives. 1,Primary prevention ie life style modification ` through Health education  2,Secondary prevention  ie  early detection through screening and 3, Tertiary Prevention through prompt treatment and uninterrupted supply of medicines .

 

In addition Centrally sponsored NCD control  program (NPCDCS)  has been implemented in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, Trissur and Kozhikkode districts.
